At a temple in Shandong province, hundreds of small metal locks are affixed to a Chinese cauldron (called a “ding”) with offerings of incense nearby. Engaged couples visit temples to place the locks, engraved with their names, and monks perform a ritual intended to “bind” the couples’ love for all eternity.
